It is somewhat daunting to consider riding 1,000 miles over a route you are not familiar with. There is also the fact of having to carry panniers with all your equipment, clothes, food etc for part of the way.(At other times there will be a sag wagon to carry these items for me). The weather is another unknown & I have some concern that the weather may be a problem especially over the high mountain passes.
The adventure is in leaving all the security of familiar territory & launching oneself into the unknown. I believe this leads to a greater appreciation of what we already have & take for granted.
Also as one grows older & begins to realize that physical vitality requires much more work to maintain I feel the need to challenge myself to do difficult activities & keep my fitness at as high a level as possible. This summer I have done more riding than usual & because of the upcoming ride I will keep training until it's time to start.
Now I need to complete a careful list of all that I need to take with me-equipment & clothing.
